Northern Illawarra

wollongong news and current affairs

The Northern Illawarra respresents the northern coastal villages of Wollongong and is easily defined as the area that lies between the Royal National Park (to the north) and Bulli Pass (to the south), neatly wedged between the Illawarra Escarpment and the sea.

Northern Exposure provides an insight into the culture of this stunning stretch of coast which has long been a favourite touring destination for those that wish to get out of Sydney (just one hour away), and now with the world famous Sea Cliff Bridge (pictured), the Northern Illawarra has become the jewel in the crown for the Grand Pacific Drive.

Australia Day no cause for celebration

THE four-year-old grandson was visiting on Australia Day so I decided to tell him what the day commemorated.

“It’s the day the British invaded and killed many of the Aboriginals who were the original inhabitants of this land,” I explained.

“So why is it a celebration?” he asked innocently.

Indeed.

It’s surprising more Aboriginals don’t stage protests on the day their home was taken from them. Because they were hunters and gatherers, and didn’t grow crops or keep livestock, the British with their guns and English law declared the land Terra Nullius – meaning no one owned it as it hadn’t been farmed.
